When we started this project we intended to have heavy involvement from the fan community. These first few months have been productive; we have a screenplay and I have nearly finished animating the prologue (no, the whole movie isn’t animated). However, our attempts at letting the community have been less than successful.

In the beginning we did have some forum activity, but that has dwindled. Part of the problem has to with how broad our topics were. We were open to any ideas, when we should have narrowed topics to better stimulate ideas.

Then there is the issue of creative thievery. How open can we make this project without revealing too many spoilers or leaving our ideas vulnerable to plagiarism.

It’s very complicated because something like this has never been done before. Then it came to us, why not ask you, the community for ideas on how to share ideas. We want to know how to communicate better, so who better to ask?

THEN! Yes, then it will be your turn. I wasn’t lying when I said this project was going to involve the online community. But, before you get too excited, I’m not going to let you see the whole script. The reasons are pretty obvious, but in case you’re feeling a bit slow today, it’s because we don’t want anyone to steal it and because it is an early, and therefore BAD, draft.

Instead, there will be a series of Ustream shows. During these live streams, all fans and non-fans are free to offer suggestions and ask questions. I want to know what you guys think. Zelda is such a beloved game and story, and we want to do it right. The story is always the most important aspect of a film, and that is especially true of a low-budget film.

Back in January 2009, I started writing what became the first draft of a screenplay for a live-action Legend of Zelda movie. The film is based off the ‘Ocarina of Time’ game in the long running game franchise, and, to raise the nerd levels, I wrote it while replaying the game (in honor of the ten year anniversary, of course).

I took a break from the script for the next four months, so that I could focus on my school work, but I came back to it in the last week of May. During the revision period, I got an itch. I kept thinking about what it’d be like if it were made into a movie. I even spent hours looking up possible filming locations. I spent another span of hours studying the production pipeline. After weeks of denial, I realized I was making a movie.

However, I am a poor art student, who isn’t a film major but an animation major. Luckily for me, a lot of the skills are transferable, but I do not have the time or the money to make a movie. But I have the resources: I’ve networked with some truly talented people, I go to a school that allows me access to tons of equipment and software, and then there’s the internet.

For a good chunk of my life, I have been deeply involved in the online community, specically the Harry Potter and Youtube scene. Seperatly, everyone in the community can only go so far, but there is so much power when we all work together. Almost any location becomes open to us (free lodging!), more talent is suddenly within reach, there’s willing extras almost anywhere to film, and there’s plenty of youtubers with really really really nice cameras and recording equipment.

This movie is going to be made, and the online fan community is going to help. It’s going to be our baby. A sign of what we can do when internet hermits unite.
