Link talks plenty in the games. Its things like other characters saying "I see it in your eyes... I know what happened" that make people think he cant talk.

Link can talk, he just does not need to most the time. After kidnapping princess Zelda in lttp, soldiers are always on his tail.

Have you read this? http://www.scribd.com/doc/7081980/Ocarina-of-Time-the-Story-Updated Yes, I know it is long, but it is a great read.
The way the aurthor incorporates Malon, in addition to elements such as magic and link being the hero of time is just epic.

Link's dark side gives a really cool sub plot through out the story.

It always bothered me that Link wasn't open with communication as a character. It took a lot of the individuality out of the character wen he wasn't engaged in conversation. I think the problem with a lot of the games was that Link appeared to be nothing more than the gopher. Gopher this, gopher that, bring me this to trade for that. Having Link say something wouldn't be entirely out of place. Without some form of spoken communication he wouldn't be as intriguing in a movie as he was in the games where the player could infer or imagine a conversation. Especially when bringing this into the medium and sphere of motion picture. A silent Link would be a character that I personally would continue to have troubled with enjoying. He doesn't have to be a busy-body but I feel he has to interact with his surroundings in more than grunts, huffs, and puffs.

Right, that's it exactly. For your movie, you don't really need to explain it, but you can use visual clues (such as a calendar, sundial, etc) something appropriate that tracks time that would be appropriate for Zelda. Also by not knowing what happened to the others, creates interest in a 2nd movie.

I was looking on some fan forums earlier this week, and a lot of people said they were Forest Spirits that just took on the form of hylian children in OoT and Koroks in WW. but then again, Fado was apparently murdered, while praying at the wind temple, by Ganondorf, and he was a Kokiri... so maybe the Kokiri and the Koroks aren't the same. I remember some subtext about them being former lost sailors. Hmmmm...

Fado also said he knew the Hero of Time... so maybe the Kokiri can live forever, but then where would Mido be? Maybe the Kokiri were just picked off over time, and Fado was only alive because he was safe in the temple?

At the same time, Fado is one of Mido's decendents... do Kokiri reproduce? They were made by the Deku Tree, but maybe that was just the first generation, the generation we see in OoT. Or maybe when they die, their "forest" spirit reincarnates into a new Kokiri.

The Kokiri confuse me.

Yay, aliveness!

I always thought of it as, like, a slow death. It's not as though little Tido's gonna keel over from heart failure the second he passes through the threshold into Hyrule Field. It's more like, the longer they stay away from their forest, they just kind of slowly shut down. The air is different, the water is different, they're away from their family and the Deku tree... I just don't think their bodies can handle it.

The aging theory is cool, but I don't think it works. The Kokiri aren't Lost Boys- they aren't children who've stopped aging. Just perpetually young.

It's been silent for awhile here, thought I get the discussion going again.

Everyone knows that the Kokiri look like hylian children in OoT and live in Kokiri Forest. It is said that if they leave the forest they die. Link, willingly leaves the forest knowing this, whist he was still under the impression that he is a Kokiri himself. However, he must have assumed this death was a cause of the dangers that exists outside the forest. After all, the Deku Tree is the protector of the Kokiri. They would also view it as dangerous because if they get lost in the Lost Woods, not a far away destination, that they will turn into skull kids. BUT all the Kokiri, during the game's end credits, are celebrating, outside of the forest, at Lon Lon Ranch.

What is the deal?

Do the Kokiri begin to age if they leave the forest, and that's why they're said to "die" if they leave? Perhaps, if they return to the forest they will stop aging again?

Thoughts?

The fishing is a side quest, and would serve no purpose to the plot. Also, if you are playing the game straight through, you do not bother visiting Lake Hylia as a kid (except for that bottle), so as an adult the newly-filled lake wouldn't be a place for fishing (no fish). So while, there could be a nod to fishing (people in the background), it seems unlikely for even that.

Hello people who dont know me!

I signed up for the sight just to help with this.

I've personally beat this game dozens of times just for the fun of it. The last 2 days I spent at my cousins house playing this and just about beat it.

Just one thing i want to point out right now.
Link does fail. Right before he enters the Shadow Temple. When the creature come's out of the well and tosses Shiek. He goes to fight a threat he cant see and gets the tar beat out of him. You dont even get to see this fight. but it ends up blacking out and being revived by Shiek. Very bad failure on his part.

I also think him obtaining his horse his a very good point to include. Epona is one of the few friends he has to help fight the evil directly. Everyone else floats in and out. His horse is always there.

The shadow temple is a pain, I don't blame you.

The Shadow or the Spirit Temple would be the best time to have Link "fail" because they are the only two new locations that we visit as an adult, the first time we are meeting new people as an adult. Therefore, there would more room to add new plot points.

I hadn't really thought about the adult Link being the act break, but I think you're right. It works better like that.

Zelda being kidnapped works well as the 2nd act break, especially if you move it to the Shadow/Spirit Temple. Someone may have mentioned this earlier, but it's probably a good idea to play around with the story at least a little bit. After all, if the film is exactly the same as the video game, why not just play the video game.

What might work is if, during the Shadow or Spirit Temple, Link is on the verge of dying after a fight with the boss, or after some accident or something. Sheik finds him and brings him to the Fairy Fountain, which heals him completely. This will give the film a kind of metaphorical rebirth. Then she reveals she's Zelda, and is kidnapped by Ganon.

I kind of hate to admit it, but I've never actually finished Ocarina of Time. The furthest I've gotten to is the Shadow Temple. I don't know why. I've finished every other Zelda game I've played. For some reason, I just never finished the game.

Well, there is an obvious failure moment: Zelda gets kidnapped right in front of his freaking face. Basically five minutes after she lowers the disguise she's held for seven years, Ganon finds her (which leads me to believe there was at least some magical protection involved in the Sheik identity) and Link is powerless to stop it.

Unfortunately, that comes a bit too late in the plot to be a proper act break.

My suggestion is that it comes when he has to go back in time again in order to complete necessary tasks/item-getting, whether it be during the Shadow or Spirit Temple mission.

I've always thought of kid link's part of the story as Act 1. Act 2 is the middle muck in the temples, and see that the world has changed. In Act 2 Link must discover who he is. However, I do not have a clear break between Act 2 and 3 yet. The main reason is that in a video game, you beat all the temples. You feel like Link isn't all-powerful because the game is challenging and it doesn't come easy for him (aka us). We have to die a few times before we can beat a boss. That is why there is no failure moment for adult Link in the games.

I think that this, has been the most challenging aspect of the writing the script for me. Everything comes too easily to Link, without the challenge that exists while playing a video game. I'm going to have to have Link fail, but I'm not sure how yet.

Never apologize for long posts! They make the world go round.

You make a valid point about act breaks and turning points, but have also highlighted a feasible fix for the problem: ostensibly, waking up as an adult could be seen as the start of act two, because it's a much larger divide. While the forest is Link's home, the Hyrule he encounters is generally a friendly, thriving place. It's when we walk out of the Temple of Time and see the destruction- the redeads and the mayhem of Castle Town- that we truly cross the threshold.

I say this for two reasons. The first and more story-driven is that Link's adult story is more interesting in almost every way (thematically, plot-wise, cinematically, and yes, romantically). The second and more practical is that, well, child actors are hard to find, good ones harder, and ones willing to work for free harder still. The less taxing the role of Young Link is, the better.

I think that you have to choose which temples are going to best compliment the story that you're trying to tell. In a film, every scene has to advance the plot and aid the hero's journey. In the video game, the temples are more important the story. Someone playing a video game doesn't mind spending 30 hours or so completing it, but films are rarely over 2 hours or so.

Ostensibly, Link's journey is to save Hyrule (and Zelda) from Ganon, but at the same time he's maturing as a person and becoming the Hero of Time. The Temples have to fit into this story.

I don't know exactly how you've structured the screenplay, but it seems to me that the first act should end as soon as Link leaves the Lost Woods. He's leaving the world he knew, like when Luke Skywalker flew off in the Millennium Falcon. Stepping onto Hyrule Field is a big turning point in the game, and it seems like the perfect way to start Act 2. The midpoint of the game seems to be when Link enters the Temple of Time and wakes up 7 years later. It's the story's biggest twist.
This would mean that the first half of the film is the 3 dungeons when Link is a child, and the second half if the 6 when he's an adult. It makes the film a little lopsided, so the final 6 will either have to be cut or shortened considerably.

Just some thoughts, and sorry this post is so long.

I think a good way to make him not look "silly" would be to just desaturated his color scheme, like they did in The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger's Joker. Another way, would be to play with the lightening to convey the general scary mood.

I do agree about clean-shaven Ganondorf, but that has issues of its own. If you've seen "There Will Be Brawl" over at The Escapist, their Ganondorf is clean-shaven (and if you haven't, check it out, because it adapts a lot of video game characters to live-action, including Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf).

The problem is, it sort of accentuates how ridiculous his hair looks, since it is bright orange and kind of spiky, and looking ridiculous instead of scary is bad. They still do a pretty decent job with it, though, so we can probably work with it, too.

Let's be honest, with one man every 100 years, that man NEEDS to be with pretty much every eligible Gerudo woman in order to keep up a viable population. This is to say nothing of inbreeding.

I don't think that Link should be silent, but he does come across as kind of a meek character. Most of that comes from the fact that he's in way over his head. The Great Deku Tree dies, he's forced out into the "real" world, he has to leave all of his friends and sneak into Hyrule Castle. And just when he thinks he's done, he has to go into suspended hibernation for 7 years. The game not only is about Link growing up, but also being comfortable outside of the Lost Woods.

Link is a normal character (comparatively speaking) forced into a very strange world. He's surrounded by characters with big personalities (Ruto, the Gorons, Impa) and reacts to them. Even Zelda, who's similarly kind of meek, is more assertive. It's because she is more comfortable in Hyrule than Link is because, when they meet, she is more knowledgeable.

Link almost works as the "straight man" to the kind of comic universe. It might be a good idea to look at other "reactors" in films, maybe even silent comedians like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. They always played outsider characters who were trying to find normality in a world they didn't totally understand.

Well, the obvious thought is to make Lon Lon Ranch into Link's base of operations- it's centrally located in Hyrule Field, and could be a place to rest and recuperate between temples. Because GOSH that milk sure does a body good.

Hi, I'm Anthony (as you can probably tell from my handle).

I don't really know anyone else on the forum, but I really like the Legend of Zelda. For anyone who's read the Brandeis Blowfish, I'm responsible for 99-100% of the Zelda jokes.

I also studied film. If you want, you can see my student films on my Facebook page (Anthony Scibelli.)

Well, you and I have already talked about this, but for the record:

Malon is Link's... link... to normality. She's his only friend that isn't a freaking Sage. She's a symbol of the simple Hylian life he can never have, thanks to fate and circumstance. She's also someone who can be a confidant- who, unlike Navi, won't nag him to move on to the next step. Someone he can talk to (y'know, provided he talks.)

Malon is a massively popular character in the Zeldaverse, but she isn't essential to the story. With cuts between scenes, Epona isn't essential either. But there's no way I'm cutting them, so tell me your thoughts on Malon down below:
